It’s not called an XV Crosstrek anymore, it’s just a Crosstrek

They couldn’t call it the XVI Crosstrek because that would be unwieldy.

Why did Subaru feel the need to include XV in the first place? Other than to better differentiate the name from the now-defunct Honda Crosstour.
Subaru has this habit of adding extraneous letters to its names. The B9 Tribeca being the previous case in point. They eventually dropped the B9 prefix, too.

I had considered a Crosstrek briefly when I was shopping around but that engine is so underpowered. I wouldn’t expect WRX levels of power, but with an engine that has all its power on the top end and 3200+ lbs to carry it would really benefit from more displacement or a turbo (but I guess you couldn’t call it a PZEV anymore).

I’m not sure. I know in other markets it was called the Impreza XV, or just the XV. Just Crosstrek is much better than XV Crosstrek. Everything was weird about the B9 Tribeca, including the name

I guess I’m too used to slow cars, I don’t mind the lack of power. It’s definitely not fast, but with the traffic where I live it’s no fun at all to have a fast car. If I moved, I’d want more power.

This one would be an XVII, which is even worse

Ultimately, you’re right - no sense in having power when there’s nowhere to use it. I went from having very little power to having basically double that amount and found the right balance of economy and power for the driving I do. The power was thrilling at first but I’ve more or less become desensitized to it. It’s really annoying when I’m in a dull commute and can’t use the power that my car has.

The “XV”designation came from the previous generation “rugged” Impreza sold overseas in Europe and Japan, the Impreza XV. The Crosstrek is sold as the XV in Europe and Japan, without the Crosstrek name.
The Crosstrek name is purely North American, probably to build a more marketable identity for the car over here. My guess is that they kept the “XV” portion of XV Crosstrek for the US market as they were related vehicles, however, nobody understood the connection, so they dropped the name.

It also depends on preference. I have friends that love having 300+hp in their dailies, even though they don’t use the power

How is it that they were able to call it a PZEV in the first place? I thought it stood for Partially Zero Emissions Vehicle. Was it equipped with a start/stop system or something?

Wouldn’t it technically be the MMXVII?
